Pathways to Postsecondary Education
There are several ways that people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities are accessing college. The two documents below outline the range of pathways to postsecondary education being utilized by students with intellectual/developmental disabilities, please see website: http://www.thinkcollege.net/for-professionals/pathways-to-postsecondary-education
The following checklist can help you get started:
- Have a copy of your career goals
- Obtain or download college catalogs of schools you are interested in
- Be sure the documentation of your disability is up-to-date, including a current psychological assessment that is less than 3 years old
- Be ready to explain how you learn best to anyone who asksKnow what accommodations work best for you
- Know your rights and responsibilities while at college
- Visit colleges before making a final choiceMeet with staff from the Disability Service Office before you start classes, to (1) review your documentation and (2) discuss what academic supports are available for students
- Arrange transportation before classes begin and practice the route at least once
- Attend an orientation seminar to get familiar with the campus
- Fill out financial aid forms before school starts
