When families and school districts disagree on placements or educational services for a child with disabilities,due process may be a last resort in resolving the dispute. This seminar is an opportunity to demystify what due process is and how it works; learn common mistakes for families to avoid; and gain insight into how judges decide outcomes. This workshop is free of charge. When an individual is denied regional center eligibility or services, fair hearings are an important step in the appeal process.  This seminar will focus on how to prepare for a fair hearing to maximize your success, and will discuss common mistakes to avoid.  Ms. Katie Hornberger, Esq. is the Director of the Office of Clients' Rights Advocacy of Disability Rights California.

加州理工學院研究人員發現益生菌可醫治自閉症兒

加州理工學院(Cal Tech)研究人員發現,自閉症兒童的種種反常行為與孩子腸胃(gastrointestinal )相關,自閉症也許可以用益生菌(probiotic)方法治療。科學家們在患有自閉症的老鼠身上注射一種名為「脆弱擬桿菌 」(Bacteroides fragilis )的對人體有益的細菌,這種細菌有助於人體的新陳代謝以及腸壁和血液系統的交換活動,注射後,老鼠不但腸胃問題得到解決,自閉症症狀也減輕。

科學家將帶有慢性便秘、慢性腹瀉以及胃食道逆流病三種病症的病毒以及自閉症病毒注射入懷孕的鼠體內,導致鼠產生病毒感染症狀,而且生下小鼠具有自閉症狀。科學家因此認為,如果孕婦懷孕期間受到病毒感染,那麼孩子患有自閉症的風險就比較高。目前該研究中心, 正在向食品和藥品管理局(FDA)申請實驗,將脆弱擬桿菌用於治療自閉症症狀。

College 2 Career: An Orientation for Parents of Clients Considering College

Orientation Date: Monday, November 4, 2013, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The College 2 Career (C2C) Program is an innovative post-secondary program for adults with developmental disabilities served by Harbor Regional Center.  C2C offers an exciting opportunity to experience community college, student housing and college life.  The C2C Program provides extra educational coaching support not otherwise available through the College for selected students who are clients of a regional center.  The program has a residential component in which the students also receive support and training in the development of skills needed to live independently in the community.  The C2C Program is accepting applications throughout the year.  All interested applicants and parents must attend a C2C orientation prior to applying.  Orientations are held the first Monday of each month from July 1 thru December 2, 2013.  For more information and to register for the session of your choice, please contact the C2C information Line at (310) 792-4528.
